This weekend’s Nazko Arts and Music Festival will celebrate the wide variety of local talent found in the community and in the larger region.
The Fifth Annual Nazko Arts and Music Festival takes place Saturday, March 7 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Nazko Valley Community Centre and will feature visual arts displays, as well as music and performances.
Jon Wyminga, who organizes the festival with his wife, Shannon Bell, says there are people coming from Quesnel and Lac La Hache this year, and the festival will feature a lot of variety.
“In the past, we’ve had everything from fiddle music to a rock band,” he said. “The age variety is quite different. We have a girl who is in kindergarten who is going to be performing with her father, and her older sister is going to be performing with her father. We have a traditional Pow Wow Dancer coming this year. There’s going to be a lot of variety — people have said in the past they’ve really appreciated the variety in the event.”
Wyminga and Bell first started the festival to bring the community together and celebrate local talent.
“I think the whole time, we’ve tried to profile our artists and musicians in the community, and it’s always been amazing to me,” said Wyoming. “The whole motivation since the beginning is we know our artists and musicians do their own thing in their corners, and we don’t know what’s going on. We’ve faced some hardships in this community, and we wanted to celebrate people’s gifts and lives.”
This year’s festival features visual arts displays from noon to 1:30 p.m., music and performances from 2-5 p.m., and a concession throughout the day. Admission is free.
The Fifth Annual Nazko Arts and Music Festival is jointly sponsored by the Nazko Valley Community Centre and the Cariboo Presbyterian Church.
