The parkade just can’t take it anymore.
For many years now one of the highlights of the year has been the rooftop concert held during the Road Kings weekend, but due to structural issues the venue has been retired indefinitely.
“What happened was the Road Kings contacted myself and Danny Rickaby,” John McCuaig, one of the organizers of the upcoming Nelson Official Bar Hop, told the Star. “They said ‘we can’t have this dance, can you guys come up with any other ideas?'”
What they came up with: a city-wide pub crawl, with six venues signed on to collaborate—the Adventure Hotel, Jackson’s Hole, Mike’s Place and Spiritbar in the Hume Hotel, Finley’s Irish Bar & Grill and the Royal on Baker.
“When you buy a $30 ticket you get a wristband that gets you into all six venues,” McCuaig said. “I think this is the first time something like this has been done in Nelson, having all these venues participating together, and it’s going to be one giant party.”
There will be a different musical act at each venue, and groups will be encouraged to rove from one bar to the next to take them all in. There will be classic rock, a Johnny Cash tribute concert and whole variety of genres on offer from local acts such as Rob Funk, Harpdog Brown, Kelly Fawcett and Frank Soda.
The crawl is on Saturday, Sept. 10 and runs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
“This is going to be a really special night, and it wouldn’t have been possible if the community hadn’t all come together on this,” said McCuaig.
