The Reach Gallery Museum (32388 Veterans Way) opens several new exhibitions on Thursday, Sept. 21.
Opening receptions are held that evening at 7 p.m. for the Art on Demand 3.3 GAP exhibition and for three shows by Indigenous artists.
Art on Demand 3.3 is curated by Chantelle Fawcett and features the work of artist Sage Sidley, who hails from Rossland, B.C.
This artist explores concepts of place, time, and memory in the context of site-specificity and urban ideologies.
Sidley’s installation examines how cellphone photography has become a form of interpersonal communication. Cellphone pictures are associated with identity construction, and a proliferating range of social and cultural activities now revolve around this technology.
Sidley’s work asks viewers to question what we use photos for, particularly in the gallery environment.
Art on Demand 3.3 GAP runs until Nov. 12.
Also opening on Thursday is Do You Remember? by Mi’qmaq artist Ursula Johnson, Out of the Current by Tara-Lynn Kozma-Perrin, and Cognitive Dissonance, featuring the work of Andrea Pepper and Cody Lecoy.
Johnson will hold an “endurance performance” in the gallery on Sept. 22, 23 and 24 from noon to 5 p.m. each day, in conjunction with her exhibition.
The performance involves pounding and splitting an ash-wood log as traditionally employed in Mi’kmaw basket-making.
The season of exhibitions is rounded out by a significant showing of regional artists. The 2017 Fraser Valley Biennale features the work of more than 20 artists from Hope to Langley.
These latter exhibitions will be featured at The Reach until Dec. 31. Visit thereach.ca for more information.
