Another new season of great live jazz from the Georgia Straight Jazz Society opens at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday at The Avalanche Bar and Grill.
The evening features a return gig, due to popular demand, by the Ryan Oliver Quartet, featuring Ryan Oliver on tenor saxophone; Dr. Tony Genge, piano; Ken Lister, bass and Kelby McNayr on drums. These four Canadian jazz greats offer a stunning start to what will be Georgia Straight Jazz Society’s finest year yet: their concert called Swinging Straight Ahead Jazz.
Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver honed his craft living on Canada’s west coast, and in Amsterdam, Toronto and New York. He has maintained a busy schedule as one of Canada’s most in-demand saxophonists, recently releasing Strive! featuring jazz legend Victor Lewis.
Over the last 10 years, Oliver has toured throughout the world with legendary Canadian group, The Shuffle Demons. He is a member of Juno-award-winning Aboriginal blues/rock performer Derek Miller’s band, and appears on Miller’s most recent recording, featuring Stevie Ray Vaughn’s rhythm section Double Trouble and Willie Nelson.
He has received numerous Canada and Ontario Arts Council grants for touring, recording and education and was nominated for the 2013 Prix De Jazz. Most recently, Oliver has served this summer as executive director for CYMC, and recently completed a successful tour of the U.K.
The jazz society’s 2018-19 calendar is almost completely booked: 40 weekly live jazz performances between early September and late May. If you’re a jazz aficionado, mark your calendar and make Thursday evening at The Avalanche your regular date.
