According to organizers of this year’s National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the Kootenays hosted one of the most successful events yet, drawing aspiring writers from Revelstoke, Golden, Kimberley, Sparwood and all over the region. In total, 16 first-timers tried their hand at the endeavour, while six regulars showed up at the Nelson Library for the regular write-ins.
“It really was a region-wide event,” said Karina Cram, co-municipal liaison for NaNoWriMo.
But the fun isn’t over. NaNoWriMo’s Now What? revision event starts in January. It will feature webinars, chats on Twitter and blog posts aimed at helping November novelists through the editing process.
“November was great to get my story on the page,” said participant Jasmine Georget. “In January and February I’m looking forward to ripping my story apart, altering it and stitching it back together into something ever better.”
Hall Printing in Nelson and Trail is offering NaNoWriMo writers discounted printing until January 31.
“It’s wonderful news,” said Deborah O’Keeffe. “A lot of Wrimos needed somewhere to print off those two hundred page NaNo manuscripts.”
Those who have yet to participate in NaNoWriMo can sign up for a camp in April at campnanowrimo.org. This creative retreat is less vigorous than the November versions. Writers will set their own word count goals and work on any writing project they wish, including plays, scripts of manuscript revisions.
