North-South-East-West Express at North Saanich Jazz Vespers

Vespers jazz series to take a break until the fall.

NORTH SAANICH – North-South-East-West Express will be the featured performers at Jazz Vespers at St. John’s United Church on June 5 at 7:00 p.m.   This Latin jazz trio includes Diego Barrientos on guitar, Brad Hawkes on percussion and Sophia Fatema on vocals and violin.

Diego Barrientos was born in Santiago, Chile and has been playing traditional Chilean guitar from a very young age. He began playing folk guitar at 10 years old, later studying classical and flamenco guitar.  Diego has a degree in music education and has worked as a music teacher for more than 10 years.   Diego combines his lifelong passion for Latin guitar music with his studies in classical and flamenco guitar, creating a fusion of the various styles, resulting in a personalized and distinct sound.

Brad Hawkes has drummed and recorded with many artists on Vancouver Island, bringing a special character, style, variety and sensitivity on the drum.

Sophia Fatema’s musical gifts are broad, ranging from choral singing and classical violin to fiddle, jazz piano and folk guitar.  Raised in a homeschooled environment, she developed a complex and compelling sound which she brings to the songs she creates.

After this service, the Jazz Vespers series will take a break for the summer, resuming on September 11.

Jazz Vespers services begin at 7:00 p.m.  St. John’s United Church is located at 10990 West Saanich Rd., across from Deep Cove School.   There is no admission charge.  An offering will be taken to cover the cost of the musicians and the Vespers program.
