Newcombe Singers plan concert, plant sale

A celebration of Canada’s sesquicentenial, “Canada Sings! A Canadian Musical Journey” and a fundraising plant sale sprout up the same weekend courtesy of Newcombe Singers.

The Newcombe Singers latest production features an eclectic mix of music, featuring Ramisnsh, Willan, Somers, Dent, Hemsworth and others under the musical direction of Peter Dent. The journey will also include Canadian Requiem Op. 108 – a work written in 2003 and based on six Canadian folk songs and other works such as the gorgeous Ave Verum Corpus by Imant Raminsh.

For those who prefer a more traditional fare, the group plans to perform well-loved favourites such as Four Strong Winds and The Log Driver’s Waltz. It’s all a loving expression of Canada’s heritage, expressed in song.

The concert takes place at the First Metropolitan Church at 932 Balmoral at Quadra on May 7 at 4 p.m. Tickets are available in advance from choir members ($15) and at the door for $20. Children under 12 years-of-age are free.

The Newcombe Singers host the annual plant sale May 6, between 8:30 am and 2 pm at 1750 Hampshire Road. It’s a great opportunity to pick up all the vegetables, herbs, perennials, shrubs and everything you need for the spring planting season–all while supporting the choir’s activities.

All proceeds support the choir. Visit newcombesingers.com for more information on the events or the choir.
