The sounds of the sea will come to Oak Bay United this weekend.
The church offers a concert by the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, featuring works by Mendelssohn, Debussy, Ravi Shankar and others, performed by the band’s small ensembles.
“Our Canadian Armed Forces musicians are a precious jewel and we are fortunate to have the Naden Band stationed here in Victoria,” said Gordon Miller, music minister. “This Sunday afternoon concert is a delightful way to get to know these fine musicians up close and personal.”
The Naden Band is comprised of 35 professional full-time musicians whose primary role within the RCN is to support naval operations, ceremonial events, and generate public awareness, helping to facilitate a greater understanding of the role the RCN serves in protecting Canadian interests at home and abroad.
Over the past 74 years, the Naden Band has established and maintained a reputation of presenting audiences at home and abroad with musical performances of the highest calibre, while taking pride in making a difference within the communities it serves.
Under the direction of Lieut. Matthew Clark, the band performs in a variety of large and small ensembles ranging from symphonic concert band, marching band, jazz band, Dixieland band, rock and contemporary ensembles as well as brass and woodwind quintets.
The Naden Band Small Ensemble Concert is Sunday, May 24 at 2:30 p.m. at Oak Bay United Church. Entrance by donation. The first 40 audience members receive a free Naden Band CD.
