Nanaimo theatre audiences have pronounced Parksville and Vancouver resident Susan Freedman’s production Old-ish the best show of the 2018 Nanaimo Fringe Festival.
Freedman received the news at the Fringe awards after-party at the Nanaimo Arts Council on Aug. 18.
“I feel thrilled,” Freedman said of the honour.
This was Freedman’s fifth appearance at a Fringe Festival, but her first at the Nanaimo event. She said she enjoyed performing at a festival so close to home.
“I’m living in Parksville right now and when it’s showtime you go toodle in to Nanaimo, which is pretty fabulous. So it’s been wonderful,” she said.
First-time Nanaimo Fringe general manager Kelly Huxham presented the other performers with personalized awards based on their shows. The festival’s top volunteers were also recognized for their contributions during the 10-day event.
Huxham said Fringe is almost entirely run by those who donate their time.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do this without them,” she said.
“It’s really important to have people volunteer for the Fringe Festival.”
