It has been almost 20 years since the Silver Creek fire roared across the hilltops surrounding Salmon Arm, destroying over 50 structures and threatening the entire city.
A new online exhibit published by the Salmon Arm Museum at R.J. Haney Heritage Village will allow people to remember those harrowing days in July and August 1998 through photographs and first-hand accounts from those who lived through them.
The exhibit, called Flight From the Flames memorializes the terror felt by residents who had to flee their homes, the courage of the fire crews and soldiers who were deployed to battle the blaze and the awe-inspiring scale of the fire itself.
The exhibit, hosted on the Virtual Museum of Canada’s website features photographs of the disaster and interviews with central figures in the fight against the fire and the evacuation of Salmon Arm.
