Gang rivalry. A case of mistaken identity. Kidnapping, revenge and murder. Sounds like something from the pages of today’s papers, but this is the story of Rigoletto, one of Verdi’s finest operas.
And it’s coming to Qualicum Beach.
This is a fully staged, action-packed presentation by Vancouver Island Opera with an orchestra of professional musicians and emerging opera singers whose talent and training will assure audiences of a memorable performance.
Your friends and neighbours might be among the local performers featured in supporting roles or in the chorus. Some may be retired professional soloists. Or they may be involved in the production such as lighting, sound or staging. Whatever their involvement, they are all dedicated and talented volunteers from the community who strive to make this a truly professional production.
This is the 11th opera staged by Vancouver Island Opera, a company founded by Tatiana Vasilieva, herself a retired opera singer. She was described by Opera Canada magazine as having a “voice of exceptional brilliance, style and vocal control.”
If you have never been to live theatre as opera, Rigoletto is a great beginning. While it is sung in Italian, the story is very easy to understand and there will be a running translation projected on the side of the stage.
Come and experience an emotional roller coaster. You will not be disappointed.
Performances take place at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre, Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 19 at 2:30 p.m.. Advance tickets are $32; at the door, $35. They are available at Cranky Dog Music, Parksville; Chocolates Plus, Qualicum Beach; and Tom Lee Music, Nanaimo.
