The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra ends its 2013-2014 season with the enthusiasm of Asia by featuring performers from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and more.
The OSO joins the celebration of Asian Heritage month with music from a rich and colourful tradition. Folk songs of Korea and the Philippines.
Brilliant violinist Susanne Hou returns to our stage to bring the ancient Chinese legend of the Butterfly Lovers to life. Ensemble Liberta from Kelowna’s twin city Kasugai, Japan, celebrate their heritage and we conclude with Toyama’s Rhapsody for Orchestra, featuring the Yamabiko Taiko drummers in a finale guaranteed to bring the house down.
“We are really looking forward to ending our season with a fun concert that celebrates our Canadian Asian Heritage,” said Rosemary Thomson,music director of the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. “Guests will experience several Asian cultures appearing on stage with our orchestra, and as always we’ll have a few surprises.”
Asian Celebration hits the stage for two concerts next month, May 10 in Kelowna, and May 11 in Vernon. “We’ve had a great season with fantastic guest artists, a great partnership with Opera Kelowna, Celebrating the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra’s 25th season and working with Shane Koyczan in his first ever appearance with an orchestra,” said Scott Wilson, executive director of the OSO. “Our Asian Celebration is a great way to end off a season filled with so much great live entertainment; all put together by our music director Rosemary Thomson and the Okanagan’s own professional orchestra.”
