The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra and Opera Kelowna are collaborating to bring the joy of the holiday’s to life in a family matinee on Dec. 8.
“We are really looking forward to working with Opera Kelowna for this afternoon of story-telling, incredible costumes, and our very own professional orchestra musicians collaborating together for this popular classic,” said Rosemary Thomson,music director of the OSO. “This performance showcases some of the amazing artistic talent we have here in the Okanagan.”
Menotti’s delightful one hour opera tells the story of a young boy Amahl who has a problem with telling tall tales and occasionally lying, and his encounter with the three kings en-route to Bethlehem. He is sitting outside playing his shepherd’s pipe when his mother calls for him (Amahl! Amahl!). After much persuasion, he enters the house but his mother does not believe him when he tells her there is an amazing star “as big as a window” outside over their roof (O Mother You Should Go Outside; Stop Bothering Me!). This fun musical that tells this magical story with humanity, community, fun and a beautiful miracle will delight the whole family.
