If you are looking for an “out of the box” fun movement and theatre experience; look no further!
The award-winning choreographer and performer Kat Single-Dain of the Vancouver-based company Dusty Flower Pot Cabaret is coming to Courtenay on Nov. 10 to present a day-long workshop in clowning partnered swing dance and contact improvisation dance.
“Surprising as it may seem,” says Single-Dain, “there is a common ground among these seemingly disparate forms; impulse, awareness and joy. In this workshop, I will be combing all three of these forms.
“We’ll be concentrating on basic core technique exercises of improvised partner dancing, learning swing dance basics (specifically Lindy Hop and Charleston) and playing physical games that merge the border between clown and dance.
“Welcome to the place where the profound and the profane meet, where we can be seriously silly, where all forms meet in simple presence. Willingness is the only requirement; it is open to all levels, and you don’t need a partner.”
Single-Dain has choreographed seven full-length, original theatre productions, co-founding and curating the Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret, named one of “Vancouver’s best-kept secrets” by the CBC.
She is the creator/director/choreographer of the critically acclaimed and Jesse-nominated Hard Times Hit Parade, an immersive theatrical extravaganza set in a Depression era dance marathon. The show opened to a sold-out month-long run in Vancouver in 2011, and continues to tour throughout B.C. to this day.
The workshop is this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is being held at the movement studio called the House of Now in downtown Courtenay at 536 Fifth St.
