On Friday, January 27, 2012, the wind ensemble Pentaedre, will be performing “ Opera  Colada” at the Bonnington Arts Centre, at 7:30 p.m.

Pentaedre, a unique musical ensemble in the Canadian landscape, explores and presents to the public a diversified and original chamber music repertoire, developed in the tradition of music for winds. Under the artistic direction of Louis-Philippe Marsolais since 2005, the five artist-musicians forming the quintet are recognized for the talent, technique, precision and colour they bring to their performance. Flute (Daniele Bourget), oboe (Norman Forget), clarinet (Martin Carpentier), horn (Mathieu Sussier),  and bassoon (Louis-Philippe Marsolais) each provide their very specific tone to create a rich, unique and homogeneous sonority that is the ensemble’s distinctive trade mark.

“Opera Colada” is a bit like an opera. The opening act, Giulio Briccialdi’s “Quintet,” is like an overture. It is written by one of the finest flutists of the 19th century, when opera was ‘the genre,’ particularly in Italy. The main parts of the opera are the comic excerpts from Rossini’s “La Cenerentola,” and five arias from Mozart’s “Cosi fan Tutte,” These are all wonderfully arranged by German clarinetist Ulf-Guido Schafer.

The second half of the concert leaves the opera house and takes us to the warm and exotic ambiances of Latin American music. The main work here is D’Rivera’s “Aires Tropicales”, followed by Plante’s “Pieda Libre Suite.” In order to switch from the operatic world to the suavity of Latin music, Lussier’s “Dos Tropicos,” a short prelude in which every instrument gets its own moment of glory, opens the second part of this musical entertainment.

Come and join us for an evening of “Wind” music at the Bonnington. Tickets are available at the Bon Marche Dollar Store until 2:00 p.m. Friday, then at the doors at 7:00 p.m.
