Boasting an enticing “geek market,” full-stage performances, busy panel rooms and on-site kids’ activities, organizers said this year’s Penticton-Con is shaping up to be one of their best yet.
“Last year, we had just under a 1,000 people. This year, we are hoping to have over that or just equal to that,” said Lily Wilson, organizer and chair of the Penti-Con Association.

Events like Penti-Con, which is taking place at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre on June 8 and 9, are popular world-wide because they are inclusive, Wilson said.
“When you are walking in, all of sudden you’ll see someone from your favourite television show — it just stops you right there. You instantly have a connection with them. There are people that get that fan base kind of thing, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s that kind of community that brings people out.”
Paul McGillion, who is known for his Stargate Atlantis and Flash fame, as well as Sharon Alexander of Reboot, Inuyasha, Transformers, My Little Pony, Lego Ninjago are the event’s television and film guests of honour.
Entertainment is coming from Vancouver in the form of The Runaway Four, a band that plays video game music, and Boyish7, an anime idol dance group. There will also be video games and board games.
Wilson said organizers are hopeful that the community in Penticton and the rest of the Okanagan will come out and enjoy everything the weekend has to offer.
“With the help of city council, we were able to get back on track financially to make this event happen,” she said of the $2,1oo grant the association received. “Spectra has already gone above and beyond to ensure this event is here to stay.
“There’s so much inclusion during our weekend, it’s inspiring. There’s something for everyone!”
