Penticton is going big for Pride Month thanks to SOS Pride

SOS Pride has organized a handful of events around the community to support the LGBTQ+ celebration

June is Pride Month and Penticton and South Okanagan Similkameen (SOS) Pride has a whole list of events for community members to partake in the celebration.

On Saturday, June 8, attendees can get their groove on at the South Okanagan Similkameen (SOS) Pride DIVA! Dance Party. The all ages event takes place at the Jim Pattison Centre for Excellence at the Okanagan College Penticton campus, kicking off at 6:30 p.m.

Vocalist and entertainer Jacklyn Sparrow will be in attendance and will perform impressions and music of stars such as Tina Turner, Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton and Diana Ross and more.

Penticton Secondary School students are hosting a Love Has No Labels week from June 10 to 14, with activities at the school as well as students out and about in the community offering exclusive Pride decals to businesses who embrace and support the LGBTQ+ community. Decals will also be available at Foundry Penticton, located at 501 Main St., for interested businesses.

On Monday, June 10, the Mayor John Vassilaki will be doing a proclamation on the steps outside of City Hall at noon to declare Penticton’s third annual Pride Week from June 10 to 14. Attendees are encouraged to wear your colours and bring your flag for photos.

Residents are invited to a potluck picnic in the park on Sunday, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Skaha Lake Park Pavilion. Everyone is welcome, and attendees are asked to bring a yummy dish and something to sit on.

SOS Pride’s fourth annual Pride Talk takes place in Room 4 at the Penticton Community Centre on Sunday, June 23. The event, which runs from 1 to 3 p.m., is a safe place for attendees to hear life stories, ask questions and join in discussion about LGBTQ+ topics.

Attendees will be able to hear from local LGBTQ+ community members, as well as health care professional Colleen Mahoney. The event is open to everyone, but is recommended for participants 12 years and older.

Finally, join floaters at the Fruit Float on Penticton’s River Channel on, Sunday, June 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring your most colourful floaties and beach accessories for this inaugural SOS Pride event, and don’t forget your sunscreen and water.
