Following a forced year off due to COVID-19, art rises once again in Penticton with the Arts Rising Festival.
Running from Sept. 22 to 26, the festival has adopted a hybrid model for 2021 – the event will be held both online and in-person at the Leir House Cultural Centre.
The festival was confirmed following approval of a $4,000 grant by Penticton city council at their last meeting Aug. 17.
“We are very appreciative to our funder for heeding the call,” said Penticton District Community Arts Council administrator Bethany Handfield.
“We were uncertain if we would have the capacity to run the festival this year but wanted to ensure that any available funding made its way to local artists.”
The annual event puts a spotlight on local artists of all kinds, with 50 per cent of artist funding being used to amplify marginalized artists.
The festival schedule is still in progress but there will be workshops with Michael deMeng, Karla Avendano, Sarah Lefebure Warriner, and Alice Strohmaier, as well as performances and other offerings from Madeline Terbasket, Maiya Robbie, and Keisha McLean.
If you are an artist who would like to participate, please visit the Penticton Arts Council website.
