Join Norman Nelson, conductor and mucial director of the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra, on Friday June 15 at Edward Milne community school or Saturday, June 16 at Alix Goolden Hall (Victoria), both at 8 p.m. for an exciting evening of music.
The program begins with Siyajabula! We Rejoice! by Malcolm Forsyth, the Edmonton composer who passed away a year ago. The work celebrates the end of the apartheid policy in South Africa in 1994, and incorporates the new South African national anthem. Forsyth was South African-born, and emigrated to Canada in 1968. He was an accomplished trombone player and this work puts the brass section front and centre.
The well-loved sounds of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 will be brought to life by Karnsiri Laothamatas, a young Thai pianist, who moved to Victoria in 2010, and studies at the Victoria Conservatory with May Ling Kwok. Laothamatas has a fine musical sensitivity which has already won her acclaim in Thailand, Indonesia and Ireland, as well as Victoria.
Rounding out the program is Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable Symphony No. 4. This symphony is a wild ride, Russian style, full of tragedy and excitement. It is a challenge for musicians and listeners alike.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, $5 for those 16 and under.
