Coldstream-based photographer Fiona Green has represented Canada in the Canadian Association for Photographic Art 4-Nations Inter-Society Digital Projected Image Competition 2014, a friendly photographic competition between Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
The competition has been running since 2009 and out of the thousands of entries every year across Canada, 80 finalists are chosen by judges to go forward into the international competition. The results were just announced and this year’s overall winner was South Africa.
“I recently took my Canadian citizenship, having been in Canada for five years, and I am beyond words of how proud I am of myself and that I have had the opportunity to represent my country,” said Green, of her first international competition. “It is just a thrill and I would recommend anyone to give these things a go.”
The competition has four title submissions, “Open, Our Canada, Monochrome and Nature,” and Green submitted three entries in Open, Our Canada and Monochrome, but only one submission is selected by the judges and it was her image in Monochrome entitled Hold-Vision-Trust-Process that took the position in the finals. The image is a portrait of Andrew Mercer from local Celtic group Cod Gone Wild. Green achieved an overall result from the 360 entries of six points out of a possible 12 points.
Green came to photography late in life, having been an artist in the U.K., in many mediums for many years but not photography. She did the portrait photos for Cod Gone Wild’s recent album, Battered and Fried and has also done all of their poster photography.
She has a diverse range of subjects that she likes to photograph but specializes in the rodeo/cowboy life and follows the Wrangler and B.C. Rodeo Association events across B.C. and Alberta.
Green’s local work includes photography for the Okanagan Science Centre, Apple Valley Auto’s and many other local artists and events, as well as family portraits. She is also a member of the Vernon Camera Club and sits on the executive as public relations and marketing coordinator.
