Portal Players productions wins award

Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me won the Best Ensemble Award at the North Island Zone drama festival in Campbell River.

The Portal Players Dramatic Society’s production of Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me won the Best Ensemble Award at the North Island Zone drama festival in Campbell River last week.

Theatre BC is divided into 10 regional zones throughout the province and each year the zones hold festivals in order to determine a best of the best performances.

“The Festival went really well,” said Carrera Schroeder, director of Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me.

The cast performed on Monday, May 16 to a sold out crowd at the Rivercity Players Stage in Campbell River. Following the performance, adjudicator Kathryn Shaw gave a brief public adjudication on the performance.

“The next morning, Tuesday, May 17, the cast, crew and various other Theatre BC members gathered at the Tidemark Theatre for a more in-depth adjudication and some workshopping,” Schroeder said. “We learned a lot from this experience.”

On Saturday, May 21, Shaw awarded the production with the Best Ensemble award.

Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, a play written by Irish dramatist Frank McGuinness that focuses on an Irishman, an Englishman and an American who are chained to the stage the entire play, trying to maintain their sanity while being guarded by unseen Arabs.
