About 25 years ago Sean Hogan was hired as a radio DJ playing country music throughout the night shift. Little did he know it would influence his life and career in a big way.
“I was sort of held captive to listen to country music,” said the singer songwriter originally from Detroit, Michigan, “and I started enjoying it.”
Hogan started playing his own style of alternative country and his career took off. He has been based on the Island for over 20 years and currently lives in Campbell River. He’ll be playing at the Frontiersman Pub in Coombs April 5 and 6 at 8 p.m.
Hogan’s debut album landed him a Canadian Country Music Award (Independent Male Artist of the Year, 1997) and his next two albums were each named Best Country Album at the West Coast Music Awards. In 2003 he won CCMA’s Roots Artist of the Year and over the years eighteen of his music videos have been aired on Country Music TV.
Many music hits later, Hogan was about to release another album when he was diagnosed with cancer. He started treatments in 2011 for stage 4 cancer and last year was declared cancer free. His album Phoenix was released last year.
Hogan said his music is soul-injected with influences of R&B and a healthy quota of rock and roots.
Recently Hogan wrote, voiced and sang a commercial for a Ford Chrysler dealership in Peace River and he hopes to do more work in the broadcasting field in the future, he said.
“That has led me full circle,” he said, alluding to his start in radio.
