High priestess of alt psychedelic country songwriting, Simone Schmidt a.k.a. Fiver from Toronto (One Hundred Dollars, The Highest Order) is stopping in town to play Audible Songs from Rockwood, music she wrote and recently released under this solo moniker.
Fiver wields goosebump-inducing tremolo-affected electric guitar riffs under a deep sombre voice flowing with memorable lyrics.
“I always wanted to do an old- time sounding record, so I’m enjoying playing acoustic guitar, finger picking and flat picking,” Schmidt said. “I’m not using any reverb, so it pushes me tonally to sing with a clarity, and do some weird melodic things.”
Schmidt is on tour with northern B.C.-based old-time songwriter Saltwater Hank. Opening up for them will be a duo version of local cosmic mange group Volunteers, comprised of founders of No Nap Records Sian Macleod and Liam McIvor.
“It’s for fans of outlaw country blues, modern alternative folk and original songwriting,” said Macleod.
Fiver, Saltwater Hank and Volunteers take the Caetani House Studio Sept. 13. Doors at 7 p.m., music starts shortly after; $10 cover at the door. All ages. Cash bar and refreshments available.
