Tune up those instruments, ladies and gentlemen, and get ready to fall back into singing.
Quadra Singers welcomes new and returning community choir members to help make beautiful music.
“All voices are welcome, and you don’t have to be able to read music,” says Quadra Singers Society president Darcy Mitchell. “Just bring along your love of music and choral singing.”
The choir’s first evening of the fall season begins at 6:45, Sept. 8 at the Quadra Community Centre. Session fees are $90, with family rates and payment options available.
Music director Linda Cannon will lead the choir as singers prepare for the December concert that will highlight Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, evocative traditional Christmas songs largely based on carols written in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Britten composed numerous choral and operatic works and was the recipient of numerous awards and honors before his death in 1976. He wrote the music for Ceremony of Carols while crossing the Atlantic aboard a cargo ship when he was returning to England from North America in 1942.
The music is based on a copy of The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems he obtained when the ship stopped at Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The choir’s concert will also feature fun seasonal pieces, a harp and cello duo and smaller groups, including a men’s performance.
Quadra Singers is founded on an island musical tradition that dates back more than three decades. Community support continues to grow, and the recently-introduced Friends of Quadra Singers program has provided an opportunity for both businesses and individuals to support choir activities, including Choir in the Community performances in non-concert venues.
