Raising a barn with song

Gospel groups gather to raise funds to build barn at Sunnybrae Bible Camp.

It’s a barn-raising where everyone gets to sit down and listen to live music.

The Shuswap Country Gospel Music Group and the li’l Ole Opry present An Afternoon of Music to Support a Good Cause, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Shuswap Community Church (formerly First Baptist) on Sunday, March 27.

Last year, $8,000 was raised for a show barn at Sunnybrae Bible Camp, and organizers hope to raise enough to build a horse barn for the camp.

This musical barn-raising will feature the True Country Band comprised of Vicki Wiebe, Lloyd Pulliam, John Derksen, Jim Jamieson, “Stewy” Hill and Gary Hill, with guest artists Al Oster, Shirley Field, Duane Stewart, Francis Greencorn, Ken Murdoch and more.

Born in Armstrong and raised on her family’s ranch, Shirley Field developed ranching  skills and a love of the cowboy way of life.

Named top Canadian yodeler, Field toured with Loretta Lynn and Marty Robbins and made a guest appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in August 1962.

She has been nominated for, and won, many awards, received the Heritage Artistic Music Award in 2000 and was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Whether you are new to yodeling, or familiar with this lively western, to-tapping music, you’ll be entertained by Field’s lively performance.

Admission to the March 27 concert is by donation and Shuswap Community Church is located at 3151 Sixth Ave.
