Registration is now being taken for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event planned in the lakecity for May 28.

Teams and individuals planning for Relay 2011 can register early online at cancer.ca/relay and receive a $5 discount off of the usual $15 registration fee before the Jan. 31 deadline.

“This year, participants can expect to see some positive changes,” says lakecity relay co-ordinator Leeyann Allan.

On May 28, she says the relay will take place earlier in the day from 1 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Most of the activities will take place during the daylight and evening hours, followed by a silent overnight tribute.

The organizers are optimistic that the new format will help make the event more accessible to all residents.

To register visit www.cancer.ca/relay. For more information, contact Leeyann Allan at 250-392-6824 or williamslakerelay@bc.cancer.ca.

Relay For Life participants celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones and fight back against all cancers while taking turns walking, or running around a track for 12 unforgettable hours of fun, friendship and fundraising.

According to the cancer society statistics more than 16,500 participants were involved in 51 Relay for Life events held in British Columbia and the Yukon in 2010.

More than 2,600 cancer survivors celebrated by walking the Survivors’ Victory Lap; almost 15,300 luminaries were lit in honour or in memory of loved ones; 6,900 volunteers played a role in making it all happen; and together participants raised more than $5.4 million for the fight against cancer.

Relay For Life is Canada’s largest community-based, non-competitive cancer event held nationwide each year in nearly 500 communities. Funds raised go towards supporting the Canadian Cancer Society’s research, information services and support programs.
