An old farmer named Vern and a horse named Baldy played significant roles in the childhood of Bryce Lundeen of North Saanich. The author brings both to life in The Last Pioneer, from riding Baldy to school to witching for water and hand-digging a well. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Lundeen moved to the northern town of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan at age eight and embarked on the life of a pioneer. The family eventually established their own farm after a typical pioneering experience.
