Begbie View Elementary has created School of Fish for the upcoming LUNA Nocturnal Art and Wonder.
To be displayed on the lawn of McCarty House Inn, the 325 fish are wood decorated with collage.
“Many artists picked themes to decorate their fish or to express their ideas,” said Linda Dickson, of the School of Fish Committee, in an email. “Each fish is unique and beautiful.”
The project came together with the help of 350 artists and volunteers.
“Not only did the whole school take part but many people that heard about it wanted to do a fish and be a part of the project. We had home school students, friends and visitors inspired to create their own fish,” Dickson said.
Among the volunteers were Lortrap who donate the plywood and cut out the fish shapes and Rob Evans teacher at RSS and students cut blocks of wood and hanger wire to mount the each fish on a stand. Home Hardware donate glue and brushes. The Revelstoke Credit Union made a donation towards the cost of sealser and Bob Dickson of Bob’s Carpentry Service donated the metal stakes and drilled all the fish.
“We were lucky to have the staff at Begbie View Elementary excited about the project – custodians, education assistants, teachers and principal all taking part,” Dickson said. “We had many volunteers help out at the art workshops during school time, and the school custodians were so helpful.”
The fish were stored in McCarty House Inn garage over the summer where volunteers sealed the fish with arcrylic.
“We hope that people enjoy each artist’s fish as they are all so unique,” Dickson said. “We also hope that the public also has the chance to make the link to environmental issues such as stream stewardship and the impact we all have on our water systems.”
