The Revelstoke Theatre Company will unveil their new production entitled Marion Bridge this Friday, Jan. 14.
Director Lyn Kaulback said she selected the play by Canadian writer Daniel MacIvor because of its ability to connect with audiences on the universal theme of family relationships. “It’s poignant, it’s funny, it’s sad,” Kaulback told the Times Review after a Jan. 9 dress rehearsal. “It’s everything that we all are in our lives, I guess. It comes out on stage in these three characters.”
The play commences when Agnes, portrayed by Revelstoke theatre veteran Suzie Cameron, returns to her rural hometown in Nova Scotia from life in the big smoke to be closer to her sick mother.
Her lifestyle, often complemented with a drink in hand, conflicts directly with her sister Theresa’s straight-laced, cross-bearing ways.
Sara is portrayed skilfully by relative Revelstoke theatre newcomer Monica Sia Embury, who came her via Kamloops where she majored in Drama at TRU, and was involved in numerous productions for TRU and Kamloops-based Western Canada Theatre.
Third sister Louise is portrayed by actor Sara Joseph, who is also a recent addition to the Revelstoke stage community via Kamloops.
Together, the three siblings reconnect in their own way to face their current challenge. “There’s all kinds of angst in between,” Kaulback says of the play, including interaction driven by “all the buttons that siblings push when they fight with each other.”
Kaulback’s last directorial effort was a major production of Chicago, and she says she’s enjoying the intimacy and intensity of the smaller production.
The show runs Jan. 14, 15, and 16, then again on Jan 20, 21 and 22 at the Revelstoke Community Centre. Doors at 7:30 p.m., curtains at 8 p.m. There is also a special matinee on Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Revelstoke Credit Union. $15 regular admission, $12 for seniors and students. The concession will serve snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.
The Revelstoke Theatre Company is also gearing up for their spring production of Norm Foster’s Mending Fences, and will be holding auditions on Jan. 25 and Jan. 27 at the Revelstoke Community Centre.
