The Fraser Valley Chinese Culture Association’s annual Spring Festival Gala will return this month to Surrey, and the event is expected to draw more than a thousand spectators.
The Spring Festival celebrates the end of the old lunar year and the beginning of the new year, and is observed annually by Chinese communities all around the world. This will be the seventh-annual gala that the FVCCA has hosted in Surrey.
The 2019 gala will return to the 1,500-seat Chandos Pattison Auditorium, located at 10238 168 Street, on Saturday, Jan. 26, with the festivities kicking off at 6 p.m.

The evening is a unique offering of talent from the Chinese community, and includes hours of live music, sketches and dance performances. The event both promotes Chinese culture and serves as a friendly platform to strengthen relationships between China and Canada, said organizers.
According to a press release, it also serves as a “wonderful evening party with rich nostalgia for overseas Chinese.”
This year, the FVCCA has invited cultural groups from across the Lower Mainland to perform in a “perfectly blended” show of Chinese and Western culture for their theme of “Love Full of Fraser.” Dance designer Li Ke and lighting designer Xu Wei will elevate the performance to a veritable “audio-visual feast.”
Festival organizers have partnered with Maotai, a brand of baijiu, to host the event. The clear spirit is made in the town of Maotai, Guizhou, and it’s one of China’s national liquors. The association will be giving away bottles of Guizhou Moutai (valued at $200 each) throughout the evening, along with other prizes, such as a Huawei P20 smartphone, guitars, fine wines from Canada’s Hanjia Wine Col, and chocolates. A grand prize of about $2,000 will also be awarded, organizers said.
General admission is $20, and VIP tickets range from $68 to $118. There are also discount rates for groups of 10 or more people. Tickets can be purchased by calling Cathy at 604-772-1546 or Susu at 778-862-0302, or by emailing chineseinfraservalley@gmail.com.
