Rossland Summit School engaging students and parents on food

Rossland Summit School is looking for input from its stakeholders on food and food culture.

As part of the Healthy Schools initiative, RSS has partnered with Health Schools coordinator and Rossland-based company Thoughtexchange to find out more about what parents, students and other community members think about food, culture, learning and community.

“We’re using Rossland Summit School as like a sort of Beta test and we were fortunate enough to be able to partner with Thoughtexchange and they’ve been gracious enough to do this pro-bono,” says Patrick Kinghorn, principal at RSS.

The Thoughtexchange process asks participants to consider the question: “What are some important thoughts or questions about food and healthy eating here at RSS?”

“There are so many things that are connected to food at our school,” says Kinghorn.

The school often uses food for fundraising and of course also offers food to students in school.

“We also have a pretty amazing, I think, [food store] that we’re developing where we prepare fresh food and hot food for kids daily,” explains Kinghorn. “So we want to get feedback on those menus.”

The school hopes to engage parents, students and future parents and students through the Thoughtexchange process, as well as any other community members interested in participating.

So far participation has been strong.

Kinghorn was initially hoping for 200 participants and they are already over the 200 mark.

“It’s been really fun watching kids participate. Like for instance, I’ve been there when they’ve been doing the thought exchange and I didn’t realize … that there’s a real craving for international food,” he says.

Kinghorn says that they have also connected with some physicians in the community.

He wants to thank Thoughtexchange for partnering with RSS and conducting the process free of charge.
