Kids can enjoy some time in the shade while being creative at Runaway Moon Theatre’s summer arts day camp.
In the Shade runs July 6 to 10 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“Children ages eight to 13 are invited to join us in having fun making things, creating stories and performing,” said Runaway Moon’s artistic director Cathy Stubington. “Activities encourage campers to express their creativity and learn about this wonderful place we live in.”
Campers will also help in the creation of a community project in Enderby. The outdoor sculpture will be decorated with birds, trees, bugs, flowers, and things that people do at different times of year.
“The project has been inspired by observations that many people (including children at the local schools) have shared in our Calendario project,” said Stubington.
During the week, participants will create lino prints to be used as designs for the sculpture. They will also be able to take home their own set of homemade greeting cards.
“We will explore the agricultural seasons through movement, expression and choreography, leading to a set of dances about the seasonal tasks and games that we play right here in Enderby/Splatsin,” said Stubington. “What we create may become part of a celebration when the sculpture is ready.”
Instructors at the camp include dancer Amanda Wooden Papillhau, who has recently returned to Enderby after spending 10 years teaching and learning dance in France, local outdoor enthusiast Teresa Christian as well as Stubington and artist Deb Humphries, who will help with the design activities related to the Calendario project. Musician and dancer Hana Friedman will serve as youth assistant.
Cost for participants is on a sliding scale. Runaway Moon offers family rates and subsidies to make their camps affordable for everyone.
