Searching for local jug bands

Community jug band project still has a few spaces left

Local musicians are willing to help others in the jug band tradition.

Local musicians are willing to help others in the jug band tradition.

There are still some spaces left in the free jug band music classes for amateur musicians at the Arrowsmith Hall.

If you like skiffle songs like Rock Island Line by Lonnie Donnegan, or jug band standards from the ‘60s including Walk Right In by the Rooftop Singers and can already play an instrument, this is a chance to learn songs in the jug band style taught by the local musicians from the band, Phil Harmonic’s Jug Band Orchestra.

Instructors are Gerry Barnum, Kerri Brown, John Hamel, Nick Hornbuckle and Doug Maclean.

You can sign up for one or more of the following free classes which started on May 23 and continue once a week for six weeks. If you want to take more than one, list them in order of preference and if there’s space, organizers will fit you in.

Although some instruments will be supplied, you are asked to bring your own instrument if you can.

The classes end on June 28 and from July 13 to 17 from 10 a.m. until  noon, a free intensive program will bring together all the instruments and players who wish to arrange and perform the songs.

After this, those who wish can make their own arrangements to continue playing in groups. Through the grant that is funding the project, there will be enough instruments to support three community jug bands.
