Opening Nite Theatre finishes the 2010-2011 season with A Night of Theatre featuring John Gardner on the piano, followed by two one act plays: The Noble Lord by Percival Wilde, directed by Susan Dearing, and The Love Course by A.R. Gurney, directed by Rose Bennett.
The Noble Lord is set in a secluded spot in the Maine woods in the neighbourhood of a summer hotel close to a small lake.
A young woman wants to attract the attention of the noble lord who is vacationing at the hotel. She devises a plan: She fakes a drowning by jumping into the lake just as the noble lord is approaching in hopes that he will save her.
The result is a short, hilarious, comedic play.
The Love Course is set in an American university where Professors Burgess and Carroway combine their literary skills to teach The Love Course.
Professor Carroway specializes in the romantics, and Professor Burgess’ interests lie in Shakespeare and literature based on broader aspects of life. The entire play takes place during a class at the university. It is the last class of the school year and Professor Carroway is moving to a new position in another university. She wants to make this a class to remember and indeed she does as she involves students Sally and Mike in her eccentric behaviour much to the dismay of Professor Burgess who has a more down to earth approach to teaching and life.
