May 8 – The Spring Thaw Tour featuring Corb Lund with guests Harlan Pepper is at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre tonight. Tickets $37.50 and available at the Centre Box Office, or by calling 604-391-SHOW(7469) or online at www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca.

May 8 – A group of teenagers playing instruments made from trash found on a landfill in Cateura, Paraguay is performing in Chilliwack tonight at Broadway Community Church (46611 Maple Ave.) at 7 p.m. The band is called The Recycled Orchestra and they have turned metal drums, oil cans, spoons, copper pipes, wire and bottle caps into cellos, violins, guitars and flutes. The concert is free of charge, with a freewill donation going toward the construction of the Community Education Centre and scholarship fund.

May 9 – The Tourist Company is playing at The Acoustic Emporium (45892 Wellington Ave.) at 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.). Tickets $10 at the door. www.thetouristcompany.ca

May 9/10 – The Woody James Band performs at the Anavets (46268 Yale Rd.) playing classic rock hits and songs from their four CDs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

May 9/10 – The Royal Canadian Branch 280 has live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays. This weekend there’s dancing from 7:30 to 11:30 (both days) to the music of Front Page.

May 9 – The Tractorgrease Concert Series, featuring music by Interloper, Kin and Michael Alleckna, is at 8:30 p.m. in the Rotary Hall Studio Theatre at the Cultural Centre. May 10 – The Art of Wine Festival is a benefit event, featuring music from The Stuart Young Trio, at the Cultural Centre at 7 p.m. There will be selections from more than 25 different B.C. wineries Proceeds go to support the Cultural Centre’s arts and crafts programs. May 10 – Local artist Zona Wale has a solo exhibition on display at The Art Room (#20-5725 Vedder Rd.) from May 10 to June 6. She has studied art in Regina, Serbia, Spain, and Mexico. Opening reception is today (May 10) from 2 to 4 p.m.

May 10 – The  Chilliwack Metropolitan Youth Orchestra will be presenting an evening of music under the batons of CMYO artistic director David Voth and maestro Johan Louwershiemer at 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church. Tickets at the door: $15/adults, and $10/students and seniors.

May 10 – Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley performs music that redefines the word ‘eclectic’ for the third annual Harrison Festival Society fundraiser at the Harrison Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m., music 9 p.m. Tickets $75 ($30 tax receipt) and available online at www.harrisonfestival.com or by phone 604-796-3664.

May 10 – The Chilliwack German Canadian Club is hosting its Western Dance with music by The Silverstars at St. Thomas Hall (46048 Gore Ave.). Dancing starts at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.). Now to May 10 – G.W. Graham theatre brings Bye Bye Birdie to the stage April 30 to May 10. The show runs Wednesdays to Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10/$15 and available at the school (45955 Thomas Rd.) and The Dogfather (9701 Menzies St.).

Now to June 7 – Art 33, the annual Chilliwack District 33 high school art exhibition, runs May 1 to June 7 at the Chilliwack Art Gallery in the Cultural Centre. The artwork is by G.W., Chilliwack and Sardis secondary’s Grade 10-12 students. Opening reception is set for Saturday, May 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. Gallery hours are Wednesdays to Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m.

Now to June 8 – The Chilliwack Visual Artists Association has its Celebration of the Arts show at the Royal Hotel from May 6 to June 8 where the lobby, café and homestead room will be transformed with a free art exhibition. Gallery hours are: Sundays to Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesdays to Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. From time to time, there will also be one or two ‘artists in residence’, sitting doing their artwork as you come in the door.
