Shoreline seeking a cast that is practically perfect in every way

Auditions being held for Campbell River production of Mary Poppins

Shoreline Musical Theatre Society will be holding auditions for Mary Poppins on Thursday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday May 26 at 2 p.m. Call backs will also be held on Sunday afternoon.

Auditions will be held at RainCoast School of Musical Theatre, #4-938 Island Highway, which is across from Foreshore Park. Bring a photo of yourself. No preparation is needed for the general audition. Those auditioning for the role of Mary should prepare the song “Practically Perfect.” There are many roles to fill, including the two Banks children (Michael Banks: playing an 8-12 year old boy plus 1 understudy), (Jane Banks: playing a 10-14 year old girl plus 1 understudy), as well as ensemble.

The musical Mary Poppins is really about how small gestures of kindness fill our lives with joy, satisfaction, and meaning. This message is particularly brought to light, in the song “Feed the Birds” sung by the Bird Woman after Jane, Michael, and Mary visit Mr. Bank’s bank. So many songs and moments in the show place the Banks family in a world not just of magic, but also of real people, real challenges, and real history. The Bankses are in need of Mary Poppins’s care and attention, but there is an entire world of people (and other living creatures) around them in need of equal care and attention.

Heather Gordon Murphy will be returning as the Artistic Director and Choreographer of Mary Poppins. Gordon Murphy has worked both locally and internationally on many productions. Kristy Miller, who has been teaching and directing music and theatre for over 25 years, will be the Musical and Vocal Director. Jana Jurek will be her talented Assistant Musical Director and Pianist.

Mary Poppins will be performed this coming Nov. 21 and 22 in the evening as well as a matinee and an evening performance on the 23 at the Tidemark Theatre.
