Sidney Classical Orchestra delves into three centuries of music

Program includes Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and guest clarinetist Rebecca Hissen

Accompanied by guest clarinetist Rebecca Hissen, the Sidney Classical Orchestra returns for its second performance of the concert season, The Elegant Clarinet, Jan. 13 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church.

An arrangement of Handel tunes by Barbirolli for the clarinet sets the program with Finzi’s Give bagatelles, played by Hissen.

Also in the program will be two Vivaldi String Symphonies, Elgar’s Serenade for String Orchestra, JS Bach’s famous Air in D major, a special arrangement of CPE Bach’s Solfeggio, and The Carol Suite by conductor and music director, Stephen Brown.

“The program has lots of variety that stretches over three centuries and very lovely music,” Brown said. “It has something for everyone. And, of course, Rebecca is a super fine clarinetist.”

Hissen, who is a member of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy and frequently performs with the Victoria Symphony, holds degrees from the University of Victoria and the Manhattan School of Music.

Co-founder of the award-winning musical storytelling group for young children, Music Corner, Hissen has also appeared on the University of Victoria faculty recital series, with the SALT New Music Festival and at the Eine Kleine Summer Music Festival.

The music begins Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church. Tickets are available at Tanner’s Books in Sidney, City Scribe in Brentwood Bay and Long and McQuade in Victoria, or at the door.
