Singing for a cause

Local resident holding recital as part of preparations for exam

It’s the culmination of years of study and practice:  the ARCT exam with The Royal Conservatory of Toronto.

Local singer Debbie Parmenter is attempting this daunting exam, which qualifies the student to become a teacher, and in preparation is giving a recital at the Okanagan Centre for Spiritual Living, 2913 29th Ave., today at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to the refurbishment of their grand piano.

The exam covers a wide range of genres from Baroque to modern and includes opera, oratorio and art songs in many languages.

“I don’t intend to quit my day job, though,”  said Parmenter.  “I do want to teach singing some day and this is a step in that direction. Perhaps I’ll even be able to start a choir at my school — that would be great!”

Parmenter has performed solos with Aura Choir, Viva Musica, Powerhouse Theatre and Kelowna Theatre as well as groups on Vancouver Island and in Japan.

“Wherever I go I like to share my music and if I can raise money for a cause, that’s even better.”
