Meghan McKenzie came in first in the junior poetry category of the annual Sooke Scribblers writing competition earlier this year.
The storm
Who’s there?
It’s just the air, just the silence.
The beaming sun disappears behind the cotton ball clouds.
A low blow whispers through the trees.
The day fades away.
Drip drop.
Rain slowly falls.
The land shimmers like diamonds in champagne.
A gust of wind and the world is dark.
Raindrops become golf balls of water.
They crash onto the cold ground.
The leaves dance through the storm like ballerinas.
Then, Boom!
Thunder roars through the dark land.
Crack!
Lightning gleams from the angry sky.
The chaos engulfs the world with the sweet sounding seduction of Mother Nature’s symphony.
Then, the wind hushes to just a quiet buzz in the trees.
Rain becomes a light pitter patter on the pavement.
The dancing leaves rest on the wet ground.
The clouds roll out and dissipate in the velvet black sky to reveal twinkles of light.
Stars scattered in the ebony night.
The land is calm now. The baby sleeps after its long tantrum.
Who’s there?
It’s just the air, just the silence.
