Soulful songstress Morgan James returning to Victoria

Favourite from 2018 TD Victoria JazzFest to play April 5 show at Elements Casino

One of the coups of last year’s TD Victoria International JazzFest is returning to the city for a show at Elements Casino this spring.

Vocalist Morgan James, who electrified audience members at the McPherson Playhouse last June in performance with renowned drummer Jamison Ross, will play the Platinum Room in a Victoria Jazz Society-sponsored show April 5. Opening the show will be fellow singer-songwriter Elise Legrow.

James, who has toured with 2017 JazzFest favourites Postmodern Jukebox, has performed on Broadway and in recent years has taken the art of putting her own jazz twist on well-known pop songs to a new level. Most recently she covered 30 Beatles songs on her own self-titled version of the White Album.

She also recently released a video in which she put her signature spin on the Nirvana grunge rock classic “Lithium,” and her cover of Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” is a YouTube hit.

The New York Times wrote of James that she is, “… a phenomenal talent whose feel for classic soul music is bone deep … This woman is on fire.”

Tickets, on sale starting Jan. 14, are $32 in advance and for Society members and students. Rush tickets at the door, if available, will be $37 each. Pick them up in person at the Jazz Society office, 977 Alston St., by calling 250-388-4423 (no service charges apply); at the Royal or McPherson box offices, or online at rmts.bc.ca.
