South End Summit set for Saturday

Jazz and big-band music planned for annual event at Wheelhouse Theatre

Two continuing inspirations in the field of jazz and big band music will be special guests at Semiahmoo Arts’ fifth annual South End Summit, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Wheelhouse Theatre.

Canada’s King of Swing, Dal Richards – now in his 97th year and still fronting an orchestra – will be back to present his annual scholarship at the event, which highlights the senior jazz bands from the three Peninsula high schools: Semiahmoo, Earl Marriott and Elgin Park.

And Dave Proznick, former director of Semiahmoo’s band program – who taught the current co-director, Dagan Lowe, when he was a Semi student – will be on hand to MC the evening.

Guest musical artist will be Vancouver-based professional saxophonist, clarinetist and flautist Ben Henriques, another Semi grad who also honed his musical chops under Proznick’s direction.

Proceeds from the event will go to all three band programs, and students’ talents will be spotlighted both in concert selections and also in a pre-concert combo kicking off the evening at 7 p.m.

The Wheelhouse Theatre is located inside Earl Marriott Secondary, at 15751 16 Ave.

Tickets ($20, $15 students and seniors) are available at Tapestry Music and from Semiahmoo Arts, at 604-536-8333.
