Spring Breakup is a new musical duo with very old hearts.
The band features the “unlikely marriage” of Yukon singer-songwriter Kim Barlow on banjo, guitar and vocals, and Mathias Kom of The Burning Hell, on ukulele, guitar and vocals.
Together Barlow and Kom write tiny, often funny, songs about the inevitable end of love and romance. This month they’re busy touring their new album, It’s Not You, It’s Me.
“Love, it’s like a trailer park,” Kom sings, “ugly but functional, the rent is cheap enough.”
Here’s how they describe the band name. “Spring Breakup: a) the term for river ice breaking apart in the northern spring thaw; b) the term Yukoners give to the phenomenon of the end of all the Yukon winter romances… as the dark days turn lighter, folks sometimes realize that their winter mating choices are best left in the dark.”
