Join celebrated artist Nancy Paterson for a conversation on cyberfeminism, technology, and computer-generated artistic production at the Surrey Art Gallery this Saturday.
Paterson is a pioneer in the realm of new media, and her talk will illuminate a career-long artistic practice that has satirically and critically examined fashion, gender roles, advertising, and the internet.
Blending together human interaction with computer processes has helped her push the boundaries of imaginative art. Paterson’s Stock Market Skirt – currently on display at the Surrey Art Gallery – has become a signature work for this important Canadian digital artist, and a key work of Canadian electronic media art.
Stock Market Skirt is a generative sculpture that consists of an array of computer screens connected to the internet, surrounding a blue taffeta party dress mounted on a dressmaker’s dummy. As live stock market data registers visually on the computer screens, computer programming created by the artist affects the dress’s hemline height – the more bullish the market, the higher the hemline rises, the lower the stock prices, the lower the hemline.
Surrey Art Gallery is the first art museum exhibition to exhibit this artwork, now referenced in the history of digital art. Now certified as a Cultural Property of Canada, Stock Market Skirt is considered a national treasure.
Paterson’s talk takes place Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at the gallery, located at 13750 88 Ave. For further information, call 604-501-5566 or check www.surrey.ca/artgallery
