Students explore social media effects

Perhaps this would be more effective as a Tweet.

The world’s growing addiction to social media and instant communication is the subject of a new play created by Dover Bay Performing Arts Academy.

The students present Status Update, which they debuted at the North Island theatre festival in February, at the high school Friday and Saturday (April 8-9).

Inspired by the Rape of the Lock, Alexander Pope’s 18th-century satire of empty social drama, members of the ensemble decided to create their own adaptation of that mock epic to satirize the technological paradox that sees people become globally connected and yet less socially connected overall.

Despite its intellectual literary roots, the show is accessible to all ages, as it focuses a comic lens on hopeless young love between video gamer Baron and vacuous cellphone addict Belinda.

Status Update comes with a succinct social message that technology is slowly taking over every facet of people’s lives, altering forever the way we communicate.

Status Update runs this weekend only in the Dover Bay multi-purpose room. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins promptly at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $5 and are available at the Dover Bay office, at the door, or from members of the class.
