Students take stage in annual Kwantlen concert

Music scholarship recipients get a chance to perform for an audience.

The public is invited to here an evening of music that will range from early 19th century works to modern music.

The Kwantlen Polytechnic University Music Department is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and offers the Scholarship Concert on Jan. 27.

“There will be 10 musicians, performing both solo and with piano accompaniment.  There are singers, pianists, harp, violin, clarinet, and percussion. The performers’ ages range from the late teens to early 20s,” said Zdenek Skoumel, who is in the KPU Music Department.

The music department offers various scholarships, ranging from $300 up to $5,350 to help musicians study.

“The scholarships are awarded based on academic and musical achievements, and the recipients are pleased to share their life passion with an audience,” he said.

Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students and seniors. Pay parking is in effect.

People can reserve tickets by calling (604) 599-3315 or sending an email to music@kwantlen.ca. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Net proceeds from the concert go into scholarships.

“In terms of fundraising, no specific goal amount has been established; the more we raise the more support we can offer next year. We are looking to find more donors in whose name more continuing scholarships can be created.”

The show gets underway at the Langley campus auditorium at 7:30 p.m. and there’s a reception after the concert.
