Submissions sought for Harbour City Photography Club’s Photo Salon exhibition

This year entries for the Nanaimo show are welcome from Victoria to Campbell River

Submissions are being sought for the Harbour City Photography Club’s annual Photo Salon show, and this year it’s open to more people than ever before.

Last year the photography exhibition was limited to entries from Duncan to Comox Valley. Beginning this weekend, shutterbugs from Victoria to Campbell River are encouraged to submit their work for consideration for the three-week Photo Salon, which runs at VIU’s View Gallery from May 27 to June 14.

“We want to make it an Island-wide, or -long, event,” said Geri Reamer, past HCPC chair and advisor to new committee members. “Victoria doesn’t do this, none of the other clubs do this particular exhibit, so it is unique to Nanaimo. We have had a long history of doing it, with a small break a few years ago, but now this will be our fourth year consecutive since we resumed that again and we want to make it a standard.”

Last year there were 94 images by around 45 photographers framed and on display in the gallery. Reamer said up to 120 pictures will be in the show this year, adding that some consider the printed image “the ultimate expression of photography,” and that something is lost when photos are viewed digitally or in slideshows. She said Photo Salon is also a chance for people to have their work exposed in high quality to a wider audience.

“We want to share the work that photographers are doing because a lot of beautifulwork is being produced and a lot of it is digital and never gets hung or viewed as a print and this is a way to see your work in print and to have it viewed by the general public and it’s also a way of bringing this art to the community,” she said.

This year photographs will be accepted in four categories: ‘nature,’ meaning landscape and wildlife; ‘digital art,’ which covers images heavily manipulated in camera or in post-processing; ‘black and white,’ which includes sepia and ‘open’ for everything else. Pieces are judged upon submission.

“In general, they are looking for how well the image portrays the subject matter and does it have visual interest,” Reamer said. “Usually we look for either does it create emotion or tell a story and we look for technical expertise, of course, in camera and in post-processing and then some originality.”

There will be prizes for the top three photographs as well as a people’s choice award.

From Dec. 1 to Feb. 28 those interested inparticipating in Photo Salon 2019 may submit up to three photographs to the Harbour City Photography Club via e-mail at photosalon@hcpclub.ca. Click here for more information and guidelines.
