If wearing full-body tights, occasionally donning a cape, and making use of your unique superpowers just happen to be your thing, then you need to check out our new show at the Kelowna Art Gallery entitled Superheroes & Supervillains.

Forty artists have created works of art that explore the subculture and phenomena surrounding their favourite superhero and villain cartoon characters. The exhibition features work in a variety of media, including traditional animation drawing, digital media, sculpture, and mixed media.

Superheroes & Supervillains opens Jan. 31 and runs until March 8. It is presented in partnership with local artists’ group Art Brew, the same team that was behind Saturday Morning Cartoons shown at the Gallery in the fall of 2013.

Jessika von Innerebner, a member of Art Brew, and one of the organizers of this show says, “We are thrilled to have this exhibition at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The work in this show is so fun – visitors will love it. Plus, it gives Kelowna’s vibrant tech/digital art community an important opportunity to share their work with Kelowna audiences.”

“The works are so imaginative, they will definitely be a hit with the kids visiting the Gallery as part of our school tours program this winter,” said Renee Burgess, head of public programming at the gallery. ”I don’t think we are going to have any difficulty getting students or gallery visitors to engage with the pieces and to start a discussion about who their favourite heroes and villains are.”

An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This will be a free event, open to members and guests, by invitation. Many of the artists included in the exhibition will be in attendance.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water St. in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com or call 250-762-2226.
