Newton resident and Capilano University student Shelby Wilson is looking to the community to help her complete her web series, Under Construction.
Wilson is competing in Storyhive, a “community-powered funding program” from Telus and the top two finalists will receive a production grant of $50,000 to create a full season.
She needs the public’s support because the winners are determined by the amount of votes via Storyhive and how well their pilot is marketed and publicized.
Wilson’s team was already awarded $10,000 by the program to produce the pilot.
Under Construction follows construction flagger Candice Myers as she works her way up to the job and respect she deserves.
Inspiration for Under Construction came for Wilson because her dad owns a construction company.
Justin MacGregor, a fellow student, became the writer and co-producer of Under Construction after Wilson approached him with her idea.
MacGregor said they’ll see how the competition goes since it’s all about engaging the community, but if they don’t win the $50,000 they might enter other contests to finish the series.
Wilson said if they win the grant, she would like to find another funding source to try for a second season, but she added that would be in “a perfect world.”
Voting for Under Construction is open until March 29 on www.storyhive.com/web-series and results will be released one week later.
