Heritage Park Secondary graduate Tosh Sutherland is making moves in eastern Canada this spring.
Sutherland landed a role in the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre For Young People’s production of i think i can that runs until the end of April in Toronto before hitting the National Arts Centre stage in Ottawa in May.
In a case of being in the right place at the right time, Sutherland auditioned for this high-energy tap production last fall and managed to find himself in the lead role of Tip.
The show opened to rave reviews and the production has sold out most of its Toronto dates.
i think i can explores how friendships can be negotiated in the unlikeliest of places, as Toronto’s hottest young dancers portray a group of diverse kids attempting to win first prize at the science fair.
Told entirely through urban tap, i think i can is set in the turbulent world of classroom cliques and schoolyard politics. Tip, a boy with a disability, and his friends struggle with the class bully and the ambitions of their science teacher. With the grand prize at the science fair on the line, friends and enemies vie for dominance.
The play is directed by Conrad Alexandrowicz and choreographed by Shawn Byfield.
Sutherland trained in Abbotsford with Bonnie-Jean Anderson of The Dance Factory and graduated from HPSS in 2010. He appeared in the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games as part of the tap dance segment and he has travelled to Germany several times for the World Tap Championships.
Sutherland loves what he is doing but has one eye on his future, and intends to return to British Columbia in the fall to attend the University of Victoria for a science degree. Until then, he plans to enjoy his time in the spotlight.
