The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared, showing Monday, Nov. 17 at the Vernon Towne Cinema, is the next of the Vernon Film Society’s fall offerings.
The movie is based on the international bestseller by Jonas Jonasson. It was a huge box office success in his native Sweden.
It’s the unlikely story of a centenarian who decides it’s not too late to start over.
Desperate to avoid his 100th birthday party, Allan Karlsson (Robert Gustafsson, who is 50 years old) climbs out his nursing home window and heads to the nearest bus station, intending to travel as far as his pocket money will take him.
His spur-of-the-moment decision to steal a suitcase from a fellow passenger launches Allan on a strange and unforeseen journey involving, among other things, nasty criminals, a large amount of cash, and an elephant named Sonya.
Gustafsson, one of Sweden’s most popular comedians, fully inhabits the role of Allan, whose complex biography includes entanglements in the major events of the 20th century, including the Spanish Civil War and the Manhattan Project. This off-kilter version of world history is an engaging tale of a life lived to the fullest.
“This uplifting, crowd pleasing entertainment is a road movie, a character study, a wild adventure and black comedy all rolled into one. It’s a helluva ride,” said Louise Keller of Urban Cinefile.
